I have have been banging on everything since exiting the womb... The nurses delivering me nicknamed me "Thumper" because I immediately patted everyone on the back in time when I washeld. I began my offical trained as a symphonic percussionist as well in drum corps in middle school (early 90's). Moving on to one of the most respected performing arts high school programs in the region I continued drum corps (Colorado State Champions 1994) & symphonic band, but also began training & working with the a percussion ensemble, jazz band, show choir and beatboxing with all male acapella group, The Inflatable Misconceptions. Starting with getting my drivers licence I started performing and gigging with any musician and any musical style from folk, jazz, punk/ska, grunge bands as well asbeatboxer for rappers & DJ's. During this time through college and grad school I never turned down a gig which resulted in experience working with a wide range of drumming styles from full drum set to Latin and African percussion and of course hippy thunder drum circles where ever I could find them. Along with earning a BFA in sculpture and a MA in Aesthetics Education lots of my gigging was with my long time rock band, Anodos Wake
At some point I took a workshop with Arthur at Naropa in Boulder & my view on hand drumming, teaching, & community changed!!!
I ended up getting my BFA in sculpture & large scale installation design. I took a year off to mountain bike, backpack, & clear my head. I then pushed into an accelerated 2-year Masters & teacher credential program. I received a license to teach K-12 fine art and a Masters in Aesthetic Education...Which means I am a specialist in using the arts (music, art, dance, theater) to enhance learning in all other subjects.
Work for me is always a balance between "career" jobs & freelancing. I work or have worked in: public/private schools, in drum therapy programs for at risk youth & cancer patients, worked in the field of mental health & special education, in curriculum development & education at a children's museum, work in the art department for the film industry, I am an exotic animal handler & teacher, I am a vinyl DJ & electronic music producer, & I also am a transformational leadership trainer. On the side I now play drums in an interactive kids-music band (called Just Kidding) and have started my own drum circle facilitator program called Rumbling Rhythms.
